New Artwork

When I began painting in 1995, I never expected that one of my strongest subject matter would be flowers. I figured I'd be doing vast prairie landscapes, or some gigantic street scenes, teeming with people and activity. But much to my surprise, the subject matter chose me. It wasn't the other way around.

There were two things that I came to love about painting – the brilliant color, and the ability to paint from life.
Painting flowers allows me the opportunity to take advantage of both. When I paint flowers from life, I can use all my senses when creating the artwork. I can smell the fragrance, and feel the buttery-soft petals. All this helps me convey a feeling within the piece.

In 'Raspberries and Sunshine', I was striving to create a sense of bountifulness within a small bouquet. I wanted to show how pretty and full the little things in life can be. I was rewarded for my efforts by Sharper Cards, which has chosen this piece to reproduce as a greeting card. It will be available later this spring.
